Robert
Frank (1924- ) was one of the most famous photographers in
America, when he stopped taking pictures in the high point
of his career in the 1950's, and started making films.
Among
his films that are presented during the festival is his debut,
Pull My Daisy, which is said to be the starting point of avantgarde
film and improvisational film making in America. This beat-film
classic is loosely based on the play The Beat Generation by
Jack Kerouac, who is also the narrator of the film.
Individual
vs Society
Me And
My Brother (1965-68) is a capturing film, which on the surface
is about mental illness and the society's response to it.
Montage, split screen, disrupted sense of time and unconventional
sound are used in this film, which is a also a study of the
fine line between documentary film and reality, and the relationship
between film and fact.
Of Robert
Frank's films Home Improvements (1985), The Present (1996)
and Flamingo (1997) are also in our programme. Featured is
also The Source (1999) by Jachuch Workman, which in a way
continues the tradition of beat-films. It is also quite star-studded:
Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper and
John Turturro all appear in the film.
