Las Hurdes
-Tierra sin pan (Land Without Bread, 1933) is a unique surrealist
documentary film of life at its worst. In this harsh travelogue
Luis Buñuel portrays life in the poorest mountainous regions
of Spain, where the majority of people live in abject misery
that stands in stark contrast with the riches of the Catholic
Church. In Spain, no sooner had the film come out than it
was banned. Its first public screening took place in France
in 1937.
The Prisoners
of Buñuel retraces Buñuel's steps in Las Hurdes. Nearly 70
years after Buñuel, the Dutch director Ramón Gieling visits
the village of Las Hurdes, brings a copy of Buñuel's classic
documentary to the village and screens the film for the villagers.
The interviews with old villagers who still recall the shooting
of the film, coupled with the opinions of local youths, make
for a sensational film.
