Best fiction of year 2000 - Maarit Lalli: Kovat miehet

Finnish Competition

There were 315 films offered to the Finnish competition, a little less than a year ago. Over one third of the 315 films were documentaries. The number of fictional films came down to a half from last year. Last year seems to have been a hiatus in Finnish short film despite the productivity in documentary film making.

Tampere Film Festival is one of the most important short film festivals in the world. A showcase of national short film has been in the festival's programme since 1978.

International Competition

Puerto Rico and Thailand are the first timers in the International Competition, which features 69 films from 37 countries, which is a new festival record. 14 of the films are début works. Of Finnish short films only one documentary film made it to the International Competition.

Russia is responsible for the biggest surprise in the International Competition. Six Russian short films made it to the competition. Large number of the movies in the International Competition come from Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Iran is also well represented, just like last year.

The number of animated films is smaller than usual. Among the 20 animations are works by many well-known directors like Garri Bardin, Paul Driessen and Georg Schwitzgebel.

The number of fictional films was once again the largest. Among the 28 works of fiction that made it to the competition were student films, début works and films by well-known veterans of short film.
