Tampere
Film Festival offers you the opportunity to see a rare collection
of Peruvian films. About 30 documentaries and short films
are shown in a series of screenings, which feature the best
documentaries and short film of the 1980's and 1990's, and
some rare documentary footage from the 1920's and 30's. One
of the four screenings is dedicated to Aldo Salvini, a well
known contemporary director.
Touch of Everyday

Life
The documentary screenigs offer heartwarming perspectives
on Peruvian everyday life. Hijas de la violencia (Daughters
of War, 1998), is a story of a young woman who grew up in
the shadow of terrorism. Alpaqueros de Chimboya (The Alpaca
Breeders of Chimboya, 1984) is about poverty stricken indians,
who survive by producing alpaca wool. Q'eshwachaka, el puento
dorado (Q'eshwachaka - The Golden Bridge, 2000) is about a
suspension bridge, which is rebuilt every year according to
the traditions of a small village.
Grotesque Humour

Director
Aldo Salvini's works brought Peruvian short film to the attention
of the whole world. Salvini made his six short films in the
beginning of 1990's, when times were still favorable to film
making in Peru. Salvini's films are spiced with grotesque
humour, and his style is very individual and expressionistic.
Alongside Salvini, one of the best known Peruvian directors
of the day is the documentarist Gianfranco Annichini. Many
famous foreign film makers have also filmed in Peru. Werner
Herzog's masterpieces Aguirre - Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo
were both filmed in Peru, and so were parts of Godfrey Reggio's
Powaqqatsi.
Two
hundred feature films have been produced in Peru between the
years 1910 and 2000. Independent short film production has
not been very profilic. Only few dozen short documentaries
or short fictional films are released per year. Animation
is more or less non-existent in Peru. In Finland Peruvian
cinema is a real rarity. Last year only one Peruvian feature
film premiered in the Finnish theatres. The film was No se
lo digas a nadie (Don't Tell Anyone, 1998) by Francisco J.
Lombardi, the most famous director in Peru.
