Tähdenlentoja
Tähdenlentoja
(Shooting Star) is a national film event for persons with
a mental handicap. It is organised by the Tähdenlentoja Association
and it takes place during Tampere Film Festival, March 6 -
7, 2001, at Tullikamari Cultural Centre.
Tähdenlentoja
is a small, independent film event that provides an alternative
to the mainstream and attempts to break through the traditional
boundaries of cultural and social policy. This year will be
the third time the event is held.
The core
of the programme consists of films made by mentally handicapped
persons, alone or as a team. One of the screenings will be
made up of films competing in the 1-minute and 3-minute categories.
The winners will be announced at the screening and the winning
films will be screened at the opening screening of Tampere
Film Festival. The festival will also compile a screening
of the films in its programme for the Tähdenlentoja event.
Lars von Trier's The Idiots will be screened on Tuesday night.
An important
part of the event is a discussion, preceded by the documentary
Isosisko ja Pekka (Big Sister and Pekka). The film was made
by Jari Nordström, the mentally handicapped young man whose
work was awarded a prize at a previous Tähdenlentoja event,
together with television director and journalist Matti Lehti.
This film is a realisation of the vision underlying the event
and the association: to bring mentally handicapped filmmakers
and film professionals together.
There
will also be a screening of Suomalaiset saunat (Finnish saunas)
by Jari Norström. The introduction for the discussion with
a theme A Hymn to Creativity is made by professor Matti Bergström.
There
is a free entry to all the Tähdenlentoja event screenings.
The aim of the Tähdenlentoja event is to offer all film fans
a cinematic experience with a difference and to give everyone,
not only those with a mental handicap, a chance to meet each
other.
