PRIZE WINNERS

PRIZE WINNERS WERE ANNOUNCED

REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL JURY

This year the jury viewed 79 films from 37 countries. For the first time, it was also possible to send video works for the competition, which made the variety of films even larger than in the previous years. In addition to the traditional short films, new kind of digital films and third world documentaries entered the competition.

The following films were awarded by the jury.

GRAND PRIX, Kiss -statuette & 5000 euros

Phil Mulloy, INVASION, UK 2001
In a society bombarded by slick and seamless propaganda, is it still possible for an artwork to impact upon our understanding of the world? It's a rare artist who can profoundly analyse the hopes, fears and anxieties of a civilisation in crisis, but Phil Mulloy has achieved this with his brilliantly subversive satire, a prescient and viscerally emotional film, unflinching in its examination of the most sinister motivations of our times. Darkly redemptive, it confirms painful and rarely-voiced truths, inviting us at the same time to confront our fundamental interconnectedness.

BEST DOCUMENTARY, Kiss -statuette & 1500 euros (Canal+)

Anke Limprecht, LEHRFILM ÜBER DIE REKONSTRUKTION VON STASIAKTEN, Germany 2001
A provocative and challenging film that perfectly splices form with content to portray the numbing bureaucracy of such investigations, alongside the importance of exposing lies and preserving perhaps unpalatable truths.

PRINCIPAL PRIZE, Kiss -statuette & 1500 euros

Slawomir Fabicki, MESKA SPRAWA, Poland 2001
Exceptional casting and performances inform this complex and compelling work, a sensitive exploration of a culture where men have few answers to conflict, other than conflict itself. A film that avoids easy answers in its full realisation of the horrors of abuse, failure and human weakness.

SPECIAL PRIZE OF THE JURY, Kiss -statuette & 1500 euros

Fanta Régina Nacro, CLOSE UP ON BINTOU, Burkina Faso 2001
Realising the full imaginative potential of the medium, Kuvastin explores the darkest corners of the human heart. Here, narcissism, jealousy, love and retribution collide in shocking and unexpected ways.

PRIX UIP TAMPERE, European Film Awards -nominee & 2000 euros

Tatu Pohjavirta, KUVASTIN, Finland 2001
Realising the full imaginative potential of the medium, Kuvastin explores the darkest corners of the human heart. Here, narcissism, jealousy, love and retribution collide in shocking and unexpected ways.

DIPLOMAS OF MERIT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL JURY

To Foustani (Monica Vaxevani, Greece 2001) which, in its transformative kiss, suggests a profound forgiveness between generations shaped by telling social pressures. At once timeless and culturally specific, it is a poignant, moving drama, richly delineated in characterisation and narrative.

Copy Shop (Virgil Widrich, Austria 2001) and Heart of the World (Guy Maddin, Canada 2001), for their innovative and immaculately executed techniques, where image and intention fuse to deliver visions, at once precise and textured, that expand the possibilities of the short film.

The spirit of place is notoriously hard to communicate on film. Hock Hiap Leong (Royston Tan, Singapore 2001) offers a lyrical and kitsch elegy to a passing world, constructing through accumulative detail a space where sudden shifts in tone work believably to suggest that humour, in its hybrid cultural collisions, is the best way to deal with significant social and environmental shifts.

The bitter truths of racism and historical revisionism in a changing Europe are best examined by focusing on the specific. Muno (Bouli Lanners, Belgium 2001) moves with great skill from the particular to the universal, suggesting that the betrayals inflicted are not only social but close and personal.

The Members of the International Jury: Aryo Danusiri, Tiina Erkintalo, Gareth Evans, Jay Rosenblatt & Bec Smith

THE RISTO JARVA PRIZE

10 000 EUROS (Finnish Film Foundation)

The Risto Jarva Prize goes to the work team Stella Polaris, Janne Kuusi and Aleksi Salmenperä, who made the film TURON BAARI / TURO'S BAR (Directed by Janne Kuusi).

During the several years of cooperation, the Stella Polaris -team has developed a method to produce a film where the performances and the story form a seamless entity. The conclusion of the film is ingenius, and it presents the coexistence of laughter and cry in a way that is completely new in the Finnish film.

FIRST MICROMOVIES COMPETITION

The jury considers Micromovies to be one of the most exciting new fields of audio visual culture. While we found the selection encouraging, we have to state that the majority of the films didn't fully address the specific nature of this dynamic new medium yet.

MAIN PRIZE 10000 euros

Paul Bush, LIE DETECTOR, UK 2001
The jury found this one minute movie to be multi-layered, conceptually clear and funny. This film hints at the explosive potential of this medium.

Harri Kassinen, NIMENI ON HIRVI, JAMES HIRVI, Finland 2002
Graphically clear and semiotically intriguing statement about the devolution of man-kind and moose-kind.

This elegant film captivates the viewer's attention even in this miniature format.

The Members of The Micromovies Jury: Erkki Huhtamo, Jonathan Wells, Phil Mulloy & Heli Rantavuo
