An English tourist asks passers-by for a light but to no avail. A few frames only have been preserved of this film, but they feature Méliès himself smoking. The preserved fragment has been copied three times to make it easier to understand.

A fantasy play by the Theatre du Châtelet that appears to be a variation of the film A Trip to the Moon. Méliès was able to realise the fantastic star chariot ride by cinematic means – after all, he had long been staging sensational show routines for theatres.

Six scientists belonging to the Astronomers’ Club depart on an exploration of the Moon. The most famous of Méliès’s films, the mother of all sci-fi films. Ten unusual and imaginative cinematograph scenes in thirty tableaux. The films borrows scenes from the novels From the Earth to the Moon (1865) by Jules Verne and First Men in the Moon (1901) by H. G. Wells.

Kuusi Astronomien klubiin kuuluvaa tiedemiestä lähtee tutkimusretkelle kuuhun. Mélièsin kuuluisin ohjaustyö, kaikkien scifi-elokuvien äiti. A play depicting the fate of Joan of Arc in twelve tableaux, described by Méliès as “ambitious”. It is said to feature 500 people onstage in lavish costumes. The number is certainly exaggerated, but in certain episodes, Méliès did use approximately fifty extras. Worth noting is the way Méliès never specifies the nationality of the enemy threatening France – to avoid the risk of offending potential British audiences...

Mélièsin "suurisuuntaiseksi" kuvaama näytelmä Jeanne D'Arcin kohtalosta 12 kuvaelmana. Näyttämöllä sanotaan olevan noin 500 henkeä upeissa puvuissa – määrä on ilman muuta liioittelua, mutta muutamissa episodeissa Méliès kyllä käytti noin 50:ä avustajaa. Huomionarvoista on, että missään kohdassa Méliès ei määrittele Ranskan vihollisen kansalaisuutta: brittiläistä asiakaskuntaa ei ollut varaa loukata...

This was the tenth of the 33 films Méliès made in 1899. It is based on the substitution trick, also known as freeze-frame. Using this special effect, Méliès turned men into women and performed the first disappearance acts which were initially very popular.
