Georges Méliès made altogether 29 films in 1903. This is one of them, as well as one of the most famous “trick films” ever. The amount of work and precision invested into this 50-metre film strip is stupendous.

A great fantasy drama with impressive tableaux: Bluebeard’s betrothal party, wedding feast, forbidden room, sinister dream, Bluebeard’s death. The whole drama of Bluebeard is based on a tiny key which fits the door of the charnel and carries the bloodstains that lead to the fate of the curious wife. In the second to last scene, Méliès stumbles and breaks his femur. Despite the pains, he finishes the shoot.

Suuri fantasiadraama, jossa on näyttäviä kuvaelmia: Siniparran kihlajaiset, häät, kielletty huone, ahdistava uni, Siniparran kuolema. Koko Siniparran draama perustuu pikkuruiseen avaimeen, joka sopii ruumishuoneen oveen ja johon tarttuneet veritahrat johtavat uteliaan puolison tuomioon. Toiseksi viimeisessä kohtauksessa Méliès kompastuu ja katkaisee reisiluunsa. Kivuista huolimatta hän saattaa filmauksen loppuun.

An exhausted black demon sleeps in a hotel room, when another traveller arrives and disrupts his rest. Méliès makes the chairs move by camera tricks. As many as 61 different editing operations were needed to multiply the chairs!

Uupunut musta paholainen nukkuu hotellihuoneessa, mutta hänen untaan saapuu häiritsemään toinen matkamies. Méliès panee tuolit liikkeeseen pysäytetyllä kameralla tehtyjen trikkien avulla. Tuolien moninkertaistamiseen on laskettu käytetyn 61 erilaista monteerausoperaatiota!

Six scientists belonging to the Astronomers’ Club depart on an exploration of the Moon. The most famous of Méliès’s films, the mother of all sci-fi films. Ten unusual and imaginative cinematograph scenes in thirty tableaux. The films borrows scenes from the novels From the Earth to the Moon (1865) by Jules Verne and First Men in the Moon (1901) by H. G. Wells.

The film is most likely to have been inspired by the silkworm trick performed by the conjuror Buatier de Kolta in 1885. The trick features a silkworm drawn onto a board transforming into a butterfly portrayed by Madame Buatier.

Elokuva on erittäin todennäköisesti saanut innoituksensa silmänkääntäjä Buatier de Koltan vuonna 1885 tekemästä silkkimatotempusta. Tempussa tauluun piirretty silkkimato kokee muodonmuutoksen Madame Buatierin esittämäksi perhoseksi.

A young troubadour visits a witch to see what the future holds in store. The film belongs to a series of children’s stories commissioned by the furniture shop Dufayel. While their parents were shopping for furniture, the children got to watch fairytale films in the shop cinema.

Nuori trubaduuri käy kysymässä noita-akalta, mitä tulevaisuus tuo tullessaan. Elokuva kuului sarjaan lastentarinoita, jotka huonekalukauppa Dufayel oli tilannut. Sillä aikaa kun vanhemmat olivat huonekaluostoksilla, lapset saivat katsella satufilmejä kaupan elokuvateatterissa.

Méliès must have shot this short film of tricks twice, since the Cinémathèque Méliès found a copy of another version of this film at a flea market.

A man turns into a whole orchestra. Using masks, Méliès can perform as seven different characters, playing seven different instruments simultaneously. Again, the use of tricks called for a brilliant script.

A staged newsreel of the coronation of King Edward VII, the successor to Queen Victoria. Due to the illness of Edward VII, the coronation was delayed from July to August 1902. The news was met with disappointment, but fortunately as soon as late June the patrons at the great Alhambra Theatre in London were presented with the coronation film made by Méliès. The film was shown to the King himself before the coronation. His Majesty, a man blessed with a sense of humour, claimed to have recognised himself in his double in the film, a laundry worker.

Lavastettu uutisfilmi kuningatar Viktorian seuraajan, kuningas Edvard VII:n kruunajaisista. Edvard VII:n sairastumisen vuoksi kuninkaan kruunajaisjuhlaa jouduttiin siirtämään heinäkuusta elokuuhun 1902. Tieto otettiin vastaan pettyneesti, mutta onneksi jo kesäkuun lopulla suuren lontoolaisen Alhambra-teatterin asiakkaat pääsivät näkemään Mélièsin tekemän kruunajaiselokuvan. Elokuva esitettiin myös kuninkaalle itselleen ennen kruunajaisia, ja hänen majesteettinsa, jolta ei huumorintajua puuttunut, vakuutti tunnistaneensa itsensä kaksoisolennossaan, siinä pesulatyöläisessä.

Again, Méliès plays with detaching limbs. The actor in the film is André Deed (real name: André de Chapais) who worked with Méliès until 1904, when he was signed by Pathé and revealed some of Méliès’s special effects to them.

Méliès leikittelee jälleen jäsenten irtoamisella. Elokuvan näyttelijä on André Deed (oik. André de Chapais), joka työskenteli Mélièsin kanssa vuoteen 1904, kunnes sai kiinnityksen Pathélle ja paljasti joitain Mélièsin trikkejä.

“The Man with the Rubber Head is among the tricks that no one could duplicate. I was dressed up as a magician, I acted as if a brilliant idea had occurred to me and so I, to the horror of my partner, cut my head off, placed it on a table, pulled another one out of my pocket and screwed it on in the old head’s place. Then I connected the severed head to a pair of bellows with a rubber hose and played around by inflating and deflating it. Finally my assistant inflated it so much that it burst!” (Méliès)

There is one guest who failed to get invited to the betrothal party of Princess Azurine and Prince Bel Azor: the evil witch… Méliès’s great fantasy film in thirty tableaux, one of the major achievements of its time along with A Trip to the Moon. The film was premiered at 1845 Porte-Saint-Martin, where a young danseuse nearly caused a scandal by appearing onstage not wearing tights, with bare legs.

Prinsessa Azurinen ja prinssi Bel Azorin kihlajaisiin jää yksi vieras kutsumatta: paha noita... Mélièsin suuri fantasiaelokuva 30 kuvaelmana, Matka kuuhun -elokuvan ohella yksi aikansa loistosaavutuksista. Elokuvan ensiesitys oli 1845 Porte-Saint-Martinissa, jossa nuori tanssijatar oli aiheuttaa skandaalin ilmaantumalla näyttämölle ilman trikoita, sääret paljaina.
