This documentary is longer than the standard of the period. The restored copy screened at Tampere Film Festival shows that the film was also carefully planned. Traffic on a summer’s night on the roads of Southern Finland, dust flies in the air, columns of vehicles approach Helsinki, people waving by the side of the road. Chartered trains arrive at Helsinki goods station from the provinces. Field kitchens are on duty to feed the marchers. First, the hordes are organised into formation in the ballpark, then the march begins. The reception takes place on Senate Square, climaxing with the speech given by farmer Vihtori Kosola to the 12,000 marchers, in the presence of the president, members of the government, General Mannerheim and the highest ranking officers of the Finnish armed forces.

Dokumenttielokuva on aikansa lyhytelokuvaksi tavallista pidempi, ja nyt esitettävästä entisöidystä elokuvasta näkyy, että se on huolellisesti suunniteltu. Liikettä suviyössä Etelä-Suomen teillä, maantiet pölyävät, autokolonnat etenevät kohti Helsinkiä, nenäliinat vilkkuvat teiden varsilla. Erikoisjunia saapuu maakunnista Helsingin tavara-asemalle. Lotat muonittavat soppatykkien avulla marssijoita. Järjestäytyminen pallokentällä, ja sitten alkaa marssi. Juhlatilaisuus Senaatintorilla ja sen kohokohta, maanviljelijä Vihtori Kosolan puhe talonpoikaismarssin 12 000 osanottajalle presidentin, hallituksen, Mannerheimin ja armeijan ylimmän johdon edessä.

The other unique and rarely seen documentary in this screening was discovered in the 1990s in the cellar storeroom of the newspaper Uusi Suomi. This is not surprising as the newspaper was one of the sponsors behind the film. The heavily loaded propaganda film directed by Kalle Kaarna (1887 – 1964) and produced by Oy. Filmi Kotka opens with a shot of the burning fields “where the whitened bones of the fallen club-wielding warriors lie” and reaches its climax with Vihtori Kosola’s speech on Senate Square in Helsinki. The films ends with a commercial: the work of the patriotic people’s movement is carried on by Uusi Suomi. Subscribe now!

Näytöksen toinen ainutlaatuinen dokumenttiharvinaisuus löytyi 1990-luvulla sanomalehti Uuden Suomen kellarivarastosta, sillä Uusi Suomi oli elokuvaa aikanaan tukemassa. Kalle Kaarnan (1887–1964) ohjaama ja Oy. Filmi Kotkan valmistama dokumentti on vahvasti ladattu propagandaelokuva. Se alkaa kytösavun aukeilta mailta ”kaatuneiden nuijamiesten vaalenneiden luiden ääreltä” ja huipentuu Helsingin Senaatintorin kohtaukseen, jossa Lapuan liikkeen voimamies Vihtori Kosola sanoo sanansa. Lopussa on mainossanoma: isänmaallisen kansanliikkeen herätystyötä jatkaa Uusi Suomi. Tilatkaa tekin!

The final film in the screening is also discovered in the cellar storeroom of the newspaper Uusi Suomi in the 1990s, is an interesting Suomi-Filmi-produced documentary on how a major Finnish newspaper was made 75 years ago.

Myös sanomalehti Uuden Suomen kellarivarastosta 1990-luvulla löytynyt kiintoisa yrityselokuva. Suomi-Filmin valmistama erinomainen dokumenttitaltiointi siitä, miten suuri suomalainen sanomalehti, helsinkiläinen Uusi Suomi, tehtiin 75 vuotta sitten.
