SAGAN OM DEN LILLE DOCKPOJKEN / TALE OF LITTLE PUPPETBOY
Directed by Johannes Nyholm
Sweden
2008 // Animation // 18 min // col.

LAB1O competition introduced a variety of ways of story telling. Jury saw several films, which do renew the cinematic expression. In the end, one film rose high above the others.

The prize goes to a coherent work, which is manufactured upon a charming character. The animation is filled with fine-tuned details – a tribute to film in the form of Ivanhoe reconstruction among others. This humane and ironic film reaches recognisable pain spots of life.

Liikkumavara

Main Prize
5 000 € (Oy Yleisradio Ab/Finnish Broadcasting Company)
LIIKKUMAVARA / WITHIN LIMITS
Directed by Annika Grof
Finland
2009 // Documentary // 89 min // col.

The most informative and touching film in the festival. The subject of the film may seem dull to many, but the end result is a tense, passionate treatise on democracy sadly limping in action. The film is not neutral – not even in the party-political sense – but in spite of this shows real empathy and respect towards all the politicians involved. The camerawork is excellent: like great portrait painting it makes many unverbalizable things visible in the faces of the people it focuses on. And editing is marvellous too, skilfully combining the most important bits of what must have been an exhausting pile of raw material.

Kansakunnan olohuone

Special Prize
1 500 €
KANSAKUNNAN OLOHUONE / THE LIVING ROOM OF THE NATION
Directed by Jukka Kärkkäinen
Finland
2009 // Documentary // 82 min // col.

Forget Nokia and innovation economy! The jury hereby demands that this film must from now on be used as the main tool for building the Brand Finland. The subjects of the film must have a great sense of humour and they must have trusted the director completely to allow the ruthlessly honest tone of the film. The film has a strong socio-political aspect, but it is also able to reach further and become a melancholic meditation on life in contemporary society in general. At first the characters in the film may seem like an amusing collection of freaks, but in the end their situation and worries are proven to be the same as ours – much like the situation and worries of the characters in Samuel Beckett's prose and drama.

The film is a gentle farewell to an era. It combines live footage, photographs and animation in an accomplished manner, creating a visually fantastic and touching depiction of the changing cityscape. The tearing ruthlessness of time is crystallised in images of demolition machines' jaws sinking into the brick walls of the old power plant.
