Music Programme
Tampere Film Festival is in the habit of embracing music, and this year is no exception. The Art of Fusion screening starts the music right on the first day at Tullikamari. Magyar Posse from Pori play music to Petri Hagnerīs experimental film Aldebaran Rising (2008).
Next, a French duo Rio Jim and Richarles Bronson climb on stage with their outstanding performance MetalkinG. Each time they perform it itīs unique, made up of images through several projectors and the surrounding sound. The duo perform their La Foxe on Saturday. Whereas MetalkinG is a powerful blast of image and sound, La Foxe relies on free association and a tempo more easy-going.
Andy Warhol needs no introduction, but his films are nevertheless a rare occasion on Finnish cinema screens. This year, Tampere Film Festival shows six of his films from the MoMA archives. Silent ones are accompanied by Jimi Tenor himself, a known Finnish wizard of experimental music. He also accompanies the MoMA: Selected screening which shows rare American short films from 1905 to 1986.
The undeniable legend of country music, Johnny Cash, can be seen in the documentary Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (2008) by Bestor Cram. The legendary prison gig is the theme, but it is not all the film has to offer. Archive material, interviews, and Jim Marshall's bleak photographs chart the persona and music of Johnny Cash.
Every year Tampere Film Festival offers the newest Finnish music videos to its visitors. This year, as a prologue to Bassweight (2008), we see music videos from London musicians, as well. Bassweight itself is a documentary of the birth and rise of dubstep from Croydon, South London to big fame all the way to Japan and Brazil. After the screening, Bassfaith party will commence, with appropriate music played by MARry DJs.
This year, the traditional long night is hosted by TagsīnīBeats. Pakkahuone and Klubi will show films on hip hop, breakbeat, and graffiti, and what would the night be without live music? On stage will appear Jontti & Shaka and Ceebrolistics to name a couple, and some time during the night there will be a b-boy battle.
