In 1917, a young Finnish sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen started to make a sculpture of a shy little three-year-old boy. The statue was called Boy of Granite. The film follows the fates of those "in the age group of the boy of granite” in the different phases of the independent Finland. Already as a young man, the sculptor lost his hearing, and his “sound world” is dramatised in the film through pictures.
