Gustav Deutsch

Gustav Deutsch (born 1952 in Vienna) is a multitalented Austrian artist who studied architecture at the University of Vienna between the years 1970 and 1979. He will attend Tampere Film Festival with FILM IST, a comprehensive and engaging piece of film art.
The FILM IST series is one the most exciting projects of modern cinema. Since 1998, it has been a work in progress and nowadays consists of thirteen parts. The series emerged as Deutsch dived into the depths of film archives in different countries. From these depths, he has fished out clips of films which have captured the early history of cinema. Nevertheless, his aim goes deeper than merely preserving history - he engages in active conversation with the found footage. A new work of art emerges as a result.

FILM IST. a girl and a gun. (2009)
The newest piece in the series, FILM IST. a girl and a gun. (2009), is also the most extensive hitherto. Its basis is D.W. Griffith's – and later Jean-Luc Godard’s – famous quote: “All you need to make a film is a girl and a gun.” Like tributaries flow into a broad stream, the film combines peace, war and eroticism into a powerful portrait of a human tossed around by his or her instincts. Maybe it also gives answers to the question: what is film?
Parts 1-12 of the FILM IST series will be seen on eight screens at the FestArt exhibition, held February 14th-March 14th at TR1 gallery. FILM IST. a girl and a gun. will be seen in the cinema at Tampere Film Festival on Saturday March 13th.
